Sapphire Newman-Fogel

BHScH

DPhil Student

Sapphire Newman-Fogel is a DPhil student in the Department of Pharmacology, supervised by Dr Daniel Anthony in the Experimental Neuropathology Laboratory and Dr Yvonne Couch in the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences (NDCN) Stroke Programme. Her research investigates the role of extracellular vesicles in ischaemic stroke, with a focus on uncovering the molecular mechanisms and pathways underlying cell-to-cell communication within the injured brain.

Sapphire holds a BHSc (Honours) in Health Sciences with a specialization in Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutics (2024) and an accelerated MSc in Neuroscience from Queen’s University, Canada, where she studied translational stroke research. Her master’s thesis examined toxicological and immune considerations from a pre-clinical trial of a viral gene therapy for ischaemic stroke. Alongside her research, she gained experience in teaching, neuroscience outreach, and health equity initiatives, including work with the University Health Network and the University of Toronto’s STEAM-D Program.
