The Department of Pharmacology offers a one-year MSc taught course to outstanding students with a good degree in biological, life and physical sciences. The Course Director is Dr Barbara Zonta.

Course aims

Upon graduating from the MSc taught course in Pharmacology, students will be able to:

  • Understand modern pharmacological principles and their potential clinical applications
  • Apply an integrative and multidisciplinary approach to research investigation
  • Design experimental protocols
  • Critically appraise research methods and experimental results
  • Communicate research results and clinical implications to a wide audience
  • Acquire transferable skills required for a career in the pharmaceutical sector or related areas

The integrative skills acquired during this training and practical experience are essential requirements in the pharmacological workplace in both academic and commercial environments.

  • Only 20-25 graduate students each year ensures that all students receive focused teaching and support to enable them to reach their full potential

  • The intensive programme will cover pharmacology from gene to organism, combining fundamental pharmacological principles with essential practical training
  • Students receive training in essential in vitro and in vivo techniques and have the option to study for a Home Office License

Sim Studentship

One funded studentship is available to candidates applying to the one-year MSc Taught Course in Pharmacology 

Eligibility criteria : Home (UK) or Republic of Ireland (ROI) applicants who:

  1. are settled in the UK within the meaning of the Immigration Act 1971;
  2. have been ordinarily residents throughout the three-year period preceding the first day of the first academic year of the course;
  3. their residence status has not been for the purpose of receiving full-time education in the past three years.
  • The scholarship will cover course fees for the duration of the course. Course fees will not cover accommodation, residential costs or other living costs.
  • The successful candidate will become member of St Peter’s college; he/she will also receive a £ 1,000 stipend payable after passing the Qualifying Exam in the first term. Some meals in college will be provided including one formal dinner per term.

2. cover letter (max 500 words) stating why you should receive the studentship and outlining your career aspirations.

Alumni destinations

Of the students who graduated in the past 3 years, approx 60% pursued further postgraduate studies ( PhD, MD/PhD and MBA) and 25% are employed in research positions either in academia or industry. Other destinations include positions as consultants, medical writers, patent lawyers, regulatory affair officers , medical sales representatives and perfume designers.
