A project team in Pharmacology is delighted to launch the second and third of three web-based short animations about Niemann-Pick Diseases and the GM2 Gangliosidoses for lay audiences aimed at newly diagnosed families. The aim of the project is to connect patients and their families globally with support organisations.

These disease specific animations follow on from the first general animations previously developed about Lysosomal Storage Diseases. The first animation on Lysosomal Storage Diseases (What are Lysosomal Storage Diseases?) has performed very well, receiving 668,237 views over 19 months. Views continue to increase with a global diversity of languages with strong engagement including Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Mandarin, Spanish (primarily Latin America), Russian, and Bengali. This trend is further supported by watch-time data, which shows consistently high engagement across most language versions. The success of the first animation has highlighted the importance of offering multiple language translations to expand global reach.

These new animations were created as a collaboration between the Platt Lab in the Department of Pharmacology and patient associations, and was supported by an Enriching Engagement Grant awarded by the Wellcome Trust.

Audience engagement with the animations will be evaluated through the collection of anonymised viewing metrics and survey responses
